THE MOKORO TRIP IS THE
QUINTESSENTIAL DELTA EXPERIENCE
Little Kwara is a small, intimate camp situated in the heart of the world famous Okavango Delta. The camp can be found in the southern part of the private Kwara concession which borders on the Moremi Game Reserve. Being a small camp, it lends itself perfectly to honeymooners or to small groups who can take over the whole camp.
There are just five luxury tents in this camp, they nestle under the shade of tall trees on raised platforms and each has a wonderful view over the floodplain. The tents are well spaced ensuring privacy and are accessed via a raised walkway which joins them to the main camp. Each room has a private, shaded veranda and a spacious bedroom with lounge area. The en-suite facilities consist of a freestanding claw-foot bath, twin basins, flush toilet and a partially covered outdoor shower. As with all Kwando camps, there is a plunge pool in the main area, along with the bar, lounge and dining room, all under open-sided canvas. The main area is inviting, homely and a great place to relax during the day.
We operate our game drives using a guide and tracker, this adds to the experience on two levels. You have two sets of eyes searching out the action, looking for tracks – this ensures a good chance of sightings, especially predators. In addition, having the tracker out front, concentrating on tracking, means that the guide is more able to talk to clients, keep them informed and answer all their questions, it leads to a more relaxed, convivial game drive atmosphere. As Little Kwara is in a private concession we have the opportunity to drive off road in search of sightings and also it means we are able to drive at night with spotlights. 30% of fascinating mammals are mainly active at night, so this gives us more opportunities to find them. The mokoro trip is the quintessential delta experience. There is nothing more relaxing than poling along the lagoon and channels with your guide, soaking up the atmosphere and seeing things from a totally different perspective. The excursion is broken by morning tea on an island followed by a short, non-strenuous walk to have a chance to experience the bush from ground level before heading back to camp in the mokoro.
Fishing is also offered at Little Kwara for 10 months of the year, but is prohibited in January and February as this is peak breeding season. Basic equipment is supplied, but avid fly-fishers are advised to bring their own equipment. There is a double deck boat available at Little Kwara which is the perfect way to travel along the waterways and have a great view of what is going on at the water’s edge and beyond. From August to December we also offer visits to the Godikwe Heronry, a very worthwhile experience for birders.
