SABLE ALLEY
Moremi & Khwai
A blend of lagoon, river, floodplain and forest while staying in modern, safari-chic lodge.
Sable Alley sits in the heart of the Khwai Private Reserve, on the northern edge of the Okavango Delta where the wild floodplains meet a quiet, lily-covered lagoon — a setting that draws hippos, elephants and buffalo right up to camp’s doorstep. This private concession borders the world-famous Moremi Game Reserve, giving guests access to some of Botswana’s richest and most varied wildlife terrain without the crowds often found in national parks.
The location feels classic Okavango — water meets plains meets woodland, and the ebb and flow of the seasonal delta literally shapes the experience. Access is by light aircraft from Maun Airport to the nearby Khwai airstrip, followed by a short safari transfer into camp.
From the moment it opened in 2017, Sable Alley was designed to balance elegant style with genuine bush immersion. The camp is built with canvas, timber and thatch, elevated on decks to give panoramic views over the water and plains, and its communal areas — lounge, bar, dining deck, fire-pit and swimming pool — are all oriented toward the wildlife theatre beyond. It has a contemporary yet earthy aesthetic, a kind of safari-chic feel where natural materials and light colours complement the wilderness rather than compete with it. Guests often end their days watching game from the pool deck or around the fire with sundowners in hand.
Accommodation consists of twelve spacious tents, including double/twin units and family options, each raised on wooden platforms with private verandas and uninterrupted views of the lagoon. Interiors are airy and comfortable, with large beds, indoor sitting areas, en-suite bathrooms offering both indoor and outdoor showers, and screens that invite the sights and sounds of the bush in. The décor strikes a balance between understated luxury and connection to place — you’re in the wild, but with generous space, quality linens and thoughtful touches that make time in camp as enjoyable as time on safari.
Game drives in open 4×4 vehicles explore the diverse habitats of the Khwai Reserve and adjoining Moremi, with excellent opportunities to encounter lions, leopards, wild dogs, elephants, buffalo and sable antelope. When water levels allow, mokoro excursions and boat safaris offer gentle, water-level perspectives of the delta’s quieter corners. Guided walking safaris provide another layer of immersion, while night drives reveal the nocturnal world. For those wanting an even more intimate experience, the camp’s partner “Skybed” sleepout — a raised platform under the stars — can be arranged.
Guests praise the quality of guiding and the relaxed, unpretentious luxury of the tents and common spaces. While it’s a premium safari experience, it retains a strong sense of place and connection with the environment. Sable Alley’s approach — rooted in community partnership with the local Khwai Village — adds another dimension to the stay, underscoring conservation and cultural respect alongside wildlife discovery.
