JACANA CAMP

Okavango Delta

The purest water wilderness - papyrus-lined channels, lily-dotted lagoons, and sweeping views of the floodplain

Jacana Camp is a serene and exclusive lodge set on a private concession in the heart of the Okavango Delta, Botswana. Nestled along a meandering channel surrounded by floodplains, papyrus swamps, and open islands, it offers a remarkable sense of remoteness and immersion in the Delta’s ecosystem. The camp offers primarily water-based safari experiences - in mokoros and boats - and also guided walks and only when water levels are low and dry land is available then game drives are possible. Guests often comment on the feeling of being in a true wilderness, yet with the comfort and service of a luxury camp, making it a standout among Delta lodges.

The camp itself is a classic example of understated luxury in the bush. Built from natural materials like thatch, timber, and canvas, Jacana Camp blends seamlessly with the surrounding landscape. The main areas, including the lounge, bar, and dining space, open onto wide decks overlooking the water, allowing guests to watch the occasional elephants and a variety of bird species moving through the floodplains.

Accommodation at Jacana Camp is provided in tented suites on wooden platforms that feature canvas walls with polished wood interiors, en-suite bathrooms, and private decks. Outdoor showers and seating areas make it possible to laze yourself into the Delta and surroundings. Guests love the feeling of privacy and intimacy in the tents, with wildlife often passing within view of the deck. The design is simple yet refined, emphasizing comfort and immersion rather than opulence.

Facilities at the camp are focused on that relaxing safari experience so there is a small pool and deck, while meals are served in the open-air dining area or under the stars around the boma. Guest feedback often praises the warmth of the staff, we know them as knowledgeable, personable, and eager to share the rhythms and stories of the Delta.

Activities at Jacana Camp are varied and closely tied to the seasons and water levels. For most of the year mokoro excursions and boat trips allow guests to explore the waterways and observe aquatic birds and hippos. Game drives are only offered in dry years or when water levels are unusually low while walking safaris offer an intimate way to explore the Delta’s flora and smaller wildlife. The guides are highly skilled and focused birders who are eager to show you those rare and wonderful Okavango 'lifers'.

Reaching Jacana Camp typically involves a light aircraft transfer from Maun or Kasane and we like it as a soft start to a longer itinerary or a quiet way to end a busy trip - the sounds of frogs and birds and insects are incredible at a lodge like this. The remoteness ensures you are unlikley to see anyone other than those in camp during your time there.
