JAO CAMP

It is worth noting that Jao is no longer operated by Wilderness Safaris. The camp is now part of Jao Collection, which belonged to the Kays family and is now also operated by them, with a focus on an exceptionally high level of luxury.

Jao is quite different from the more traditional canvas-and-thatch safari camps found elsewhere in Botswana. The camp was extensively redesigned with a highly contemporary architectural approach, using sweeping curves, natural timber, recycled materials, glass, woven textures and earthy tones. The main area is a dramatic multi-level structure beneath soaring thatched-style roofs, with different spaces connected by elevated wooden walkways and decks. There are several lounges, a bar and dining area, fire deck, library and gallery, as well as an unusual museum and natural-history collection. One of the most memorable features is the pool area, which sits beneath a sculptural woven canopy inspired by a weaver-bird nest.

Jao has five spacious suites and two exclusive-use villas. The suites are set amongst the trees and connected to the main area by raised walkways. They are much more substantial than a conventional safari tent, with open-plan interiors incorporating a bedroom, lounge and dressing area beneath high, sweeping roofs. Each suite has a large private deck overlooking the surrounding waterways and floodplains, together with its own private plunge pool and shaded sala. Bathrooms are spacious and include a freestanding bath, double vanities and both indoor and outdoor showers. The interiors combine bespoke furniture, natural materials and muted colours, giving the rooms a contemporary but very natural feel.

The two villas provide an even more exclusive experience and are particularly suitable for families or small groups. Each has two en-suite bedrooms, a private living and dining area, a large outdoor deck, plunge pool and fire pit. The villas come with a dedicated guide, private vehicle, chef and butler, allowing the experience to be tailored entirely around the guests.

The main area includes an elegant dining room, bar, several lounges, a library and gallery, wine cellar and natural-history museum. There is also a gym and a particularly good spa offering treatments in a peaceful setting amongst the trees. The museum and gallery are especially interesting, providing an insight into the Delta's natural history and environment rather than simply serving as decorative spaces.

Jao also offers a sleep-out experience, allowing guests to spend a night on an elevated platform beneath the stars when conditions and water levels permit. This is a wonderful complement to the luxury of the main camp, giving guests the opportunity to experience the Okavango at its most elemental.

Jao sits in an area where permanent water and dry land occur alongside one another. Game drives explore the islands and surrounding dry areas in search of elephant, lion, leopard, buffalo, antelope and other wildlife. Because Jao operates within a private reserve, activities can include night drives and guided walking, providing experiences that are not generally possible in the same way within a national park.
When water levels are suitable, mokoro excursions and boating provide a completely different perspective on the Delta. Travelling quietly through the channels by mokoro is particularly atmospheric, with opportunities to see aquatic antelope, hippos, crocodiles and an extraordinary variety of birdlife. Boat safaris allow guests to travel further through the permanent channels and lagoons. Guided walks are also available as well as catch-and-release fishing.
