MOGOTLHO

Mababe River

Overlooks a permanent river in a wildlife-rich corridor

Mogotlho Safari Lodge is a classic tented safari camp set on the banks of the Khwai River in Botswana’s Mababe region, ideally positioned between the Okavango Delta, Moremi Game Reserve, and Chobe National Park. This location is one of its biggest strengths—overlooking a permanent river in a wildlife-rich corridor, the camp enjoys constant animal movement, with elephants, buffalo, predators, and prolific birdlife frequently seen right from the lodge itself.

The camp style is relaxed and authentic, offering a traditional safari feel with a touch of comfort. Built off-grid and designed to blend into the surrounding bush, Mogotlho has a natural, unfussy atmosphere rather than a high-end, contemporary design. The central area is centred around a thatched lounge and dining space that opens onto an elevated viewing deck overlooking the river, creating a social and scenic heart to the camp where guests can unwind between activities.

Accommodation consists of around 11–13 spacious Meru-style safari tents, along with a couple of family units. Each tent is positioned for privacy and uninterrupted views, with a private wooden deck facing the river. Inside, the rooms are comfortable and well-appointed, featuring king or twin beds and en-suite bathrooms with showers and double basins. The overall feel is classic and comfortable rather than ultra-luxurious, staying true to the safari aesthetic while providing all the essentials for a relaxed stay.

Facilities are simple but well thought out, in keeping with the camp’s natural style. There is a central lounge and bar area, an open dining space, and a swimming pool set on a deck overlooking the Khwai River—an ideal spot to cool off while watching wildlife come down to drink. Evenings are often spent around the fire or on the deck, taking in the atmosphere of the bush.

Activities at Mogotlho focus on making the most of its exceptional location within a private concession. Daily game drives are the highlight, with experienced guides exploring both the concession and surrounding areas. Night drives are a major advantage here, offering the chance to see nocturnal species rarely encountered elsewhere. Guided bush walks provide a more immersive perspective on the environment, while cultural visits to Mababe village offer insight into local life and the relationship between communities and wildlife. Seasonal mokoro excursions and optional helicopter flights add further variety, depending on water levels and guest interest.

Overall, Mogotlho Safari Lodge offers a well-rounded and authentic Botswana safari experience. It combines a prime riverfront location, strong wildlife viewing, and a relaxed, classic camp style—making it particularly appealing for travellers looking for excellent game viewing in a less crowded, more natural setting without the price tag of ultra-luxury camps.
