MOMBO CAMP

Mombo has been rebuilt to retain the character and traditions of the original legendary camp while introducing a more sophisticated interpretation of responsible luxury. The camp is constructed from wood, canvas and natural materials and sits beneath enormous mangosteen, fig and other indigenous trees. Raised wooden walkways connect the accommodation and main areas, allowing wildlife to move naturally beneath the camp while giving guests elevated views across the floodplain. The design has a wonderfully understated safari character, combining classic African influences with contemporary luxury rather than feeling like a conventional lodge.

The main guest area is elevated beneath thatch and opens towards the surrounding wilderness, with comfortable lounge and dining spaces, a bar, library and expansive viewing decks. There is also a traditional boma where dinners can be enjoyed around the fire, adding a more authentic African atmosphere to the experience.

Mombo has nine spacious tented suites, including a family unit, each designed to make the most of the spectacular wilderness setting. The suites are raised above the ground and feature a separate bedroom and sitting area, large en-suite bathroom, indoor and outdoor showers and a freestanding copper-toned bathtub. Large windows and open-sided areas allow the Okavango landscape to become part of the room, while each suite has a generous private veranda with a shaded sala, daybed and private plunge pool overlooking the floodplain. The family accommodation provides two interconnected bedrooms and shared living space, making Mombo suitable for families and multi-generational travel.

There are two swimming pools, a spacious lounge and bar, dining areas, a library, viewing decks, a traditional boma and a photographic hide. A small fitness centre is available for guests who want to exercise between activities, while massages and wellness treatments can also be arranged. The camp is solar powered, reflecting their emphasis on low-impact, conservation-focused tourism.

The main attraction at Mombo is its exceptional big-game viewing. Twice-daily guided game drives explore the Mombo concession and surrounding Moremi wilderness, with the area particularly famous for its large concentrations of predators. Lion and leopard are especially prominent, while wild dog, cheetah, hyena and other species are also regularly encountered. Night drives provide the opportunity to see nocturnal species and experience a completely different side of the Delta.

Depending on conditions and water levels, activities may include seasonal boating and mokoro excursions, providing a different perspective of the Okavango waterways. Guests can enjoy photographic safaris, specialist wildlife viewing from hides, birding, stargazing and helicopter excursions over the Delta. Conservation experiences and insights into Wilderness’s rhino reintroduction and wider conservation work add another important dimension to a stay at Mombo.

Mombo is located on Mombo Island, towards the northern tip of Chief’s Island within Moremi Game Reserve, the combination of permanent and seasonal water, fertile grasslands and woodland creates an exceptionally productive habitat for wildlife. Access is by light aircraft, normally via Mombo airstrip, making it an ideal component of a Botswana fly-in safari.
