Okavango Delta Set for Exceptional Safari Season in May 2026

The Okavango Delta is entering a standout safari period as strong upstream rains drive higher-than-average flood levels across the region. Significant rainfall across Angola and northern Botswana has set the stage for generous water levels throughout the Delta system. This abundance of water is already reshaping the landscape, with expanding channels and flourishing floodplains creating ideal conditions for water-based safari experiences.

Weather conditions in May are favourable, with clear skies, warm daytime temperatures, and cooler evenings following the end of the summer rains. Wildlife viewing remains highly productive, with large herds of elephant and buffalo, abundant antelope, and active predators including lion, leopard, cheetah, and wild dog. The presence of young animals and lingering migratory birdlife adds further appeal.

Access to some areas, including Moremi Game Reserve, is currently impacted by flooding, limiting road travel. Moremi Game Reserve is currently closed due to flooding. As a result, fly-in safaris remain the most reliable and efficient way to reach camps.

Positioned just ahead of peak season, May offers strong value with lower rates and good availability, while still delivering exceptional safari conditions.
